Day 4: New SOPUDEP & MABE

Breakfast was quite the hit this morning! They made us delicious pancakes that were by far the roundest and fluffiest any of us had ever seen.

After breakfast, we departed for New SOPUDEP at Delmas 83 once more to help with the last few tasks before the school is completed. Today, we were in charge of setting up for a wedding that will take place in the auditorium this upcoming Saturday. We helped set up decorations, as well as the chairs after we cleaned up the room a bit. The husband to be showed up to see the set up, which was neat for us.

All of us are truly amazed with how much of a business woman, and very successful business woman, Rea is. She is incredibly creative when it comes to brainstorming ways to work towards SOPUDEP achieving independence from donors, and it was a treat to see her in action today.

After New SOPUDEP, we grabbed a quick bite to eat at the famous Epi’dor and made our way towards MABE, an orphanage we support. We brought with us some food, clothes, and a monetary donation to help with the children’s schooling and other needs. MABE is typically one of our most conflicting visits because it is hard to spend time with the children and then simply leave them after only an hour or two. However, we were glad to hear about some of their progress including the installation of solar panels to provide them with electricity during the day and at night, as well as the employment of a better lawyer to help with the adoption process.

Unfortunately, the adoption process is extremely difficult. For example, these two brothers have been waiting over 4 years to be adopted by an American couple, which is heart breaking to hear. It was no surprise to us that we saw a lot of the same faces we have seen every single year.

Upon returning home, we celebrated Bataille’s birthday, which is the same day as the signing of the Haitian Constitution. We can imagine no better person to be born on such a momentous day. The family was so kind to include us in the festivities, and all of us are continually grateful for the love Rea and her family extend to us each day.
