Day Two

Day two est fini! We started our first day nice and late with a eight am wake up, although the rooster had a different plan at five am. We started the day off with a delicious breakfast of mango, papaya, pineapple, toast, eggs, annnnd bacon! After eating we set out for the day — starting off by heading to the the new SOPUDEP, the school that was just completed last year! For those of us who have been involved since the schools inception, it was a very emotional moment to see a dream so many of us fought to see come to fruition. For the newcomers, the school was an incredible site, a full four stories with an auditorium, computer lab, and incredible view of the city. After we went a little further into the neighborhood when Rea is starting a new orphanage. A friend of Los Altos High decided to begin this orphanage project a year ago and just purchased a house done the street from SOPUDEP.. Rea has recently been housing ten little girls in her “orphanage” that we’ve all grown to call home, and they will all move to the new orphanage once it’s all fixed up.

We stopped for a quick lunch then it was off to MOJUB — a woman’s vocational center. Because it was a Sunday, all of the women were at church or home with their children, but we got the chance to speak with the programs leader: Rosaline. We got the chance to hear her tell the story of MOJUB’s conception, and to hear her discuss the process that has been made since we were here last. We were so excited to tell her we had bought donations to support their tailoring program over the next few years.

Finally, after returning home we set out for a hike in our Petionville neighborhood. Though we got to the top right as the sun was setting, we got an incredible view of the city below, and then time spent hiking was a great opportunity to get to know our Haitian friends, and practice a little bit of bad creole. We raced home in the near dark just in time for dinner and had a delicious dinner of beans, rice, salad and meat. As always we are exhausted but so ready to start the next day!
